Explore Explain S5 E7 & E8: ‘The State of Data Viz’ special webinar

Welcome to the seventh AND eighth episodes of the fifth season of Explore Explain, a long-form video and podcast series all about data visualisation design.

These episodes form a two-part special taken from a recorded webinar held on 4th December 2024 titled ‘The State of Data Viz’ and featuring a panel of guests including:

The panellists were hand-picked to offer their valuable insights about the state of the data visualisation field. Collectively they covered the full spectrum of professional participation: design practice, academia and education, professional services, journalism, book authoring, tool vendor, community leadership.

With contributions from the live audience, raising questions and responding to questions about the topics being explored, we set out to cover a range of different topics relating to this field:

  • What’s good and what’s got better?
  • What’s bad and what’s got worse?
  • What are we hopeful about?
  • What are we concerned about?
  • What are the risks and opportunities for this field to flourish?

In the first-part (episode 7) we explored ‘the practice and the people‘ looking at:

  • Creations: Trends in data vis methods, products, techniques, discourse
  • Professions: Freelancing/studios, roles/teams in organisations, journalism, academia etc.
  • People: Who is in this field, who is not but who should be? Membership, diversity, leadership, geographic representation, age profile, language

In the second-part (episode 8) we moved on to cover ‘the research and the resources‘ looking at:

  • Academia: Research, education, knowledge transfer, graduates, talent pool
  • Tech: Tools and data vis technological developments
  • Resources: Communities, social media, websites, books, events
