Appearance on The Chris Gill Podcast

Last month I had the pleasure of being invited on to The Chris Gill Podcast. Chris’ background is in sports analysis and so his guests are typically drawn some of the brilliant talents working in that world. I was therefore really privileged to be invited as a guest, despite not working in professional sport but at least having had some experiences, to talk about data visualisation and to offer some insight into its relevance and application in sports analysis.

‘How to create the BEST data visualisations! – Andy Kirk #63’ is available on Spotify as an audio episode or on Chris’s YouTube channel as a video episode. Chris has really usefully timestamped and bookmarked the separate topics we went through as follows:

  • 0:00 – Introduction
  • 1:53 – Andy joins and gives background, into to data viz
  • 6:59 – What is a data visualisation?
  • 11:28 – Starting to blog, learning and building an audience
  • 15:00 – Andy’s experience within the sporting domain
  • 22:16 – What makes a good data visualisation?
  • 29:37 – Communicating messages and receiving feedback
  • 33:55 – Common mistakes people make
  • 37:37 – Tools used, and some that Andy recommends
  • 40:07 – Feeling overwhelmed when starting out
  • 43:32 – How the data viz industry has changed and continues to do so
  • 49:52 – Taking inspiration from others
  • 53:49 – Andy’s data visualisation book, finding inspiration

Thanks again to Chris for inviting me on and for the really enjoyable discussion!
